Overview of Adult Psychiatric Disorders

The American Psychiatric Association’s Task Force and staff have developed and prepared the DSM-IV, the diagnostic manual that identifies the criteria for a psychiatric diagnosis. The DSM-IV classifies diagnoses into over sixteen groups, allowing mental health professionals to make multi-axial diagnoses that capture duration and severity of current and past problems. Midwest Clinical Research Center protocols are generally limited to the following diagnostic groups:

• Delirium, Dementia and Amnestic and other Cognitive Disorders.

• Substance related disorders (Abuse and Dependence)

• Schizophrenia and other Psychotic Disorders (includes Schizoaffective disorder)

• Mood disorders (includes Major Depression and Bipolar Disorder)

• Anxiety disorders (includes Panic disorder, Phobias, Post Traumatic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder)

• Sexual and Gender Identity disorders

• Sleep disorders

• Pain

• Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
