Overview of Adult Psychiatric DisordersThe American Psychiatric Association’s Task Force and staff have developed and prepared the DSM-IV, the diagnostic manual that identifies the criteria for a psychiatric diagnosis. The DSM-IV classifies diagnoses into over sixteen groups, allowing mental health professionals to make multi-axial diagnoses that capture duration and severity of current and past problems.
